JESS'S RULE: Did you know?

Did you know about this?
At TenderLeaf Clinic, we believe that patients know their bodies better than anyone else. When symptoms persist, worsen, or simply don't feel right, they deserve to be listened to and investigated appropriately.
That's why we welcome the introduction of Jess's Rule, a new NHS initiative designed to encourage healthcare professionals to take a fresh look when patients repeatedly seek help for the same concerns.
What is Jess's Rule?
Jess's Rule follows a simple principle: "Three strikes and we rethink."
If a patient presents three times with the same symptoms or concerns, healthcare teams are encouraged to:
Reflect
Consider what the patient has reported previously and whether anything has changed, been overlooked, or requires further exploration.
Review
Reassess the situation, consider alternative diagnoses, identify any potential red flags, and seek input from colleagues where appropriate.
Rethink
If necessary, arrange further investigations, tests, or referrals to ensure serious conditions are not missed.
The aim is to reduce delayed or missed diagnoses by encouraging clinicians to revisit assumptions and take persistent symptoms seriously.
The Story Behind the Rule
Jess's Rule was inspired by Jessica Brady, who tragically passed away from cancer at the age of 27.
In the months before her diagnosis, Jess attended multiple consultations with her GP practice about ongoing symptoms. Her family later campaigned for a formal process that would prompt healthcare teams to review cases where patients continue to seek help for unresolved concerns.
Their efforts have helped bring greater awareness to the importance of listening carefully to patients and recognising when symptoms require a fresh perspective.
Why This Matters
Persistent symptoms should never be ignored.
Many health conditions, including cancer and other serious illnesses, are more effectively treated when identified early. Jess's Rule reinforces the importance of:
Listening to patients' concerns
Looking beyond age-based assumptions
Reassessing symptoms that do not improve
Encouraging continuity of care
Supporting collaborative clinical decision-making
Importantly, the rule recognises that patients are experts in what feels normal—or abnormal—for their own bodies.
What This Means for Patients
If you have sought advice multiple times for the same problem and your symptoms are continuing, worsening, or changing, it is appropriate to seek further review.
Healthcare should be a partnership. Asking questions, sharing concerns, and advocating for your health are important parts of that partnership.
At TenderLeaf Clinic, we encourage patients to trust their instincts. If something doesn't feel right, continue the conversation with your NHS healthcare practitioner until you have the answers and support you need. We can often help by corresponding and collaborating with your GP or healthcare provider to ensure nothing is missed. We have done this many times before and seen positive results.
